ict_support Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 Has anyone used Sonicwall web filtering and how does it compare to smoothwall?
unixman_again Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I can only compare Sonicwall to Smoothwall Express. There are pros and cons to both. Sonicwall (and other products that I've used including Bloxx and Firebox) are an appliance. If you don't maintain your support contract, updates, tech support, etc cannot be used. With Smoothwall Express, you can download a new version for free when it is upgraded. With Sonicwall there are loads of modules that you can purchase which enhance the basic product. The mail filter module was very useful for us. If you have the money, an appliance solution is better than a free solution. There is always help available at the end of the phone.
ict_support Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 I currently use smooothwall SWG but would like to hear from people that have used the sonicwall filtering
FN-GM Posted September 28, 2012 Posted September 28, 2012 I used to use it in my last place. It was utter useless. Loads of websites that are not English where not categorized, so the kids used the french word for proxy, games etc. It was very poor. I wouldn't use it again. 1
