Netbook with black screen and white cursor no matter what

I'm trying to fix a Samsung Netbook for a friend.

 

Symptoms:

 

See the loading screen then just get a black screen with a moveable white cursor

 

Have tried:

 

Restoring from recovery partition - I start this and I get the black screen again! I don't get anything past the loading files screen

Install Windows 7 from a known working USB stick - Black screen again!

Safe Mode

VGA mode etc etc

Reset BIOS to defaults

 

All roads lead back to the black screen apart from a live Ubuntu install on a USB stick which does boot into a full desktop.

 

 

 

Now installing Linux is not an option so any ideas, this should be a simple reinstall really
