DHCP configuration questions

I’ve never configured DHCP on a server before. Everything has always been static. I’m intrigued by the ease of setup, but I have some questions about the security.

 

Noob question:

 

Is it possible to restrict the server to only give addresses to devices with domain credentials? I just want to prevent little Johnny from plugging in his laptop and running amok.

The simple answer is not easily. If you havent configured DHCP before I would start there. There are suggestions here on the forum regarding special functions of managed switch or something called packet fence or similar.

You can prevent Jonny and his laptop by using a certificates to all your clients, and IPsec.

How many of you guys use DHCP on your school networks without certificate authority? (is it overkill or a necessity?)

I think you'll find that almost everyone here will be using a DHCP server on their networks. As for CAs, I would say that they are currently a lot less common.

Definately running DHCP on the school network and the home networks in both of our houses.........
