[sims] Quick Solus 3 Question

Hey folks,

 

New poster with a new poster question about Solus 3 -

 

If you install Sims workstation on a machine then use Solus 3 to install its agent afterwards, is that going to cause any problems or be at any disadvantage as opposed to installing Sims workstation strait out of Solus 3?

 

We're about to start imaging all our machines after having an entirely new network installed and would like to include Sims in the images to make rock solid sure that everybody is going to have it on the 1st of September, but just want to check that i'm not breaking future use of Solus 3 in the processs. I'm particularly wary about this as were going to be using Sims for registration for the first time ever and i've heard some less then pleasent things about Solus 3 on the grapevine.

 

Apologies if this is staggering obvious or has been answered recently, i'm not entirely in the loop with Sims and I coulden't find the answer in the first few pages of search results.

It wont cause any problems as SOLUS will overwrite the files. It will only cause an issue when you deploy an update through SOLUS3, the old installers don't get added to the setups folder, as they are installed through SOLUS3

So just to clarify - The S3 agent overwrites the update stuff on the workstation installs and will update those indefinately, but you can't do it the old fashioned way (manual install and simsload) anymore after the first update because S3 doesen't put the installers in the setup folder on the server?

Yep that is true. On a clean SIMS/SOLUS3 install there wouldn't be a setups folder as everything is done via SOLUS3.

Just please, don't include the SOLUS3 agent in the image for workstations.

We had one school do that and it caused no end of problems.

It took a good day to sort out and fix.

Yes it will be fine in the image but it will mean that you have all your SOLUS3 agents on the workstations will have the same GUID.

If you don't have a script or something you will have to manually change all the agents GUID's in the registry and in the config on each workstation.

ROFL!!! So what about the Globally_unique_identifier, IE the GUID each S3 workstation has? Like Ghostgame says, you'll need a script to update them - I have such a script but you'll still need to define what software they have within the UI and you'll have to be careful to only run it once AND not on the server. I guess you could add a runonce reg key to the image, but then why don't you get the regkey to install the s3.

I know it's in the local workstation settings file and the server S3 database but didn't know it was anywhere else.

Be in regedit. Thats where i did all my changes for the workstation GUID.

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - CCS - SOLUS3 - Agent -AGENTID)
