GPP Printers

One of the most common threads here, I think!

 

Anyway, GPP printers.

Nothing too out of the ordinary, the setup roughly ,is thus.

 

Globally, a PDF network printer mapped via GPP user preferences applicable to all managed stations and all users.

Then 40 separate GPO's, one for each printer, applicable to the relevant security groups for each station. Again GPP user preferences for these, but set default.

 

I've tried a few combinations with no luck - being that I can't seem to get the default printer to pick up properly (the one picked up per station/security group). It's either the PDF printer or none, despite the PDF printer not being told to be default.

Currently I don't even have the PDF printer as I'm farting about with deleting all shared printers, then mapping from scratch. That does actually appear to work but 40 second logons isn't great for mandatory profiles.

 

Anything I'm doing drastically wrong?

Think I've got this sorted.

Registry fix to "RemovePrintersAtLogoff" solved it, makes it re-evaluate default printers etc at next logon. No difference to speed

How did you implement that? I got stuck with default printers not working and had to put it on hold. It worked after the 2nd logon but the first user logon always resulted in a wrong default printer being selected.

GPO registry entry to apply that fix - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Provider\ - new dword RemovePrintersAtLogoff value 1.

 

PDF printer at a global level, not set to default (although with words to SLT later, maybe we should default to this to save more on printing and make people think)

Printers otherwise mapped via their own GPO as a preference, set to default to the relevant stations (gpo allowed for All Site Users and the security group for that pc location)

Totally OT but what network PDF printer are you using? Just curious...
