Creating start menu with GP Preferences. Hot to create folders?

Hi,

 

We have been using folder redirection for our start menus which has worked so far but we are just installing laptops for staff outside of school. We are trying to not use local users to save confusion and we have now got most things sorted.

 

One of the main things left is the start menu. When disconnected from the network the users start menu is empty as it cant connect to the network.

 

Im just looking at using group policy preferences to create start menus instead hoping that it will work when the user is offline.

 

One problem im having is that i cant see how to create shortcuts inside folder. E.g. All programs -> Office -> Word.

 

The second is i cant see how to delete folders such as administrator tools.

 

Is this possible?

Update:

Just had a new idea, could i use GPP to copy the start menu that we currently use for start menus to all computers c drive and then redirect users start menus to c:\startmenus?

Create subfolders by typing the subfolder name at the start in the Name field, e.g. "Office\Word 2010".

 

To delete folders, simply use the Folders section of GPP.

I have now thought of a new plan that combines both GPP and folder redirection which hopefully keeps it easy and doesnt destroy login times as we already use folder redirection.

 

GPP copies the start menu to the c drive using create so then once its done it wont have to check or update the menu everytime they log in or turn on the computer apart from the first time.

 

Folder redirection then points to the c drive.

 

This way we can keep it read only and keep everything custom. The amount of start menus that we have could slow down logins if we set to update or create when just using GPP shortcuts.
