To be fair, the Cow's Udders are mammaries, therefore: breasts. So if we're being pedantic ALL ice cream made with Milk from ANY animal is 'Breast Milk' - the species is not specified... I'd be MORE concerned if it WASN'T breast milk of some description to be honest... Although that weird Soya milk doesn't count. It's not milk, it's a Soya fluid. Vile plasticy stuff.

 

Stimulant looks a bit like a Lemon Swirl but I wonder if it is one of those 'jokey' ice cream brands with scandalous flavour names for the kicks?

Lol being devils advocate, they do seem to specify the species now. Cartons of 'milk' usually have 'contains Cows milk' on the side and feta has 'contains Goats milk' etc. So it IS true that the species is actually specified on the packaging.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about eating another woman's breast milk what with the DNA and all that, but I would definitely be inclined to try my own - I think the attitude towards Human breast milk is disgraceful and the number of women who think it is 'disgusting' to feed their babies with the milk nature provides for them is terrifying. If a calf drinks Cow milk, a foal drinks horse milk, a Kitten drinks Cat milk, why is it therefore 'disgusting' for a Human baby to drink milk from the Human breast? Our thinking is all backwards and wrong. If anything it is MORE wrong to feed cow milk to a baby of a totally different species! Adults no longer need human milk so it is normal that adults do not consume it, but that doesn't mean that it is wrong for us to do so, although I'd have reservations drinking the milk of another woman as breast milk contains DNA - I'd prefer to know the source (i.e. myself).

 

Men make me laugh - they sexualise the breast and laugh joke and fantasise about kissing/licking/sucking them etc etc, but yet brand a lactating mother feeding her child 'disgusting'... It's shameful. You know I've even witnessed ignorant teenage boys accuse a breastfeeding mother of being a 'paedophile' for 'making her baby suck her t*t'. Our attitudes towards breasts and breastmilk need to change.

Totally agree with the first part but I must say it's only girls who I know which think beast feeding is disgusting. A lot won't even try it because they have read somewhere that it hurts...

How terrible! Considering how vitally important it is, our young are so poorly educated on such an important topic!

 

In the moments following Labour, breastfeeding stimulates the production of oxytocin which helps the uterus to contract and expell the placenta and helps prevent post-partum haemorraging. It also stimulates production of endorphins helping Mother and Baby to bond. The Colostrum is vital for building babys immune system, is full of Vitamins helping to prevent eye infections and helps clear the bowels of meconeum which helps prevent jaundice.

 

Breastfeeding itself shouldn't hurt - it might be a bit weird or slightly uncomfortable if the breasts are swollen with milk, but the act of breastfeeding itself reduces this. The painful bit is when the nipples dry out and crack or if the mother gets mastitis but these can be treated. They are certainly not reasons to never try it! What a terrible shame!

It is her personal experience that breastfeeding was difficult that she had to eventually discontinue with both of her children and her daughter could not feed her baby at all having to resort to bottle feeding while still in hospital.

It is censoring discussions on breastfeeding in this way that promotes ignorance amongst new and prospective mums. So no, I don't think we should stop the discussion. I think every woman will have a different experience of Breastfeeding based on her physiology and health and that of her baby. I have plenty of friends (believe me, my facebook feeds are flooded with baby baby baby at the moment as almost all my friends from school, former colleagues and family members are all either pregnant for the first, second or third time, new mums or mums of toddlers...) who will happily tell you that breastfeeding was the most wonderful experience in the world and the only time they had pain was when they suffered mastitis, and there will be others who will tell you that they tried and hated it, and others again who will never try it.

 

If a woman has the right attitude towards breastfeeding and is willing to try it, her subsequent experience is a matter of personal choice and personal experience. I think it is a terrible shame and demonstrates poor education when prospective mums refuse to even TRY to breastfeed based on something 'someone else said' or something they 'read on the internet' - just because one woman had a bad time doesn't mean everyone will and it is the scaremongering and general ignorance that makes breastfeeding such a misunderstood and contentious topic. It makes me really angry when I see people abuse a breastfeeding woman. That is not to say that a woman should just disrobe at every opportunity, but equally she should not have to hide her actions as they are not shameful. Every woman will have a different experience - some have a great time with their first baby and a terrible time with their second, others will prefer to express their milk manually or with a pump then bottle feed it. I think it is important for all new mums to be properly educated and not to listen to scare stories they read on the internet and evaluate breastfeeding as a solution for them based on their experience of it. If they have a horrible experience, fine, fair enough, by all means find a different solution that works for you based on your actual personal experience, but don't discount it as an option from the get go just because you hear bad things!

 

Personally, I certainly intend to try it, and if I can, I'd prefer my children to have breastmilk. But if upon trying it and evaluating the experience for myself, another option is better for the health of me and my baby, then I will choose that - but it will be an informed choice based on experience, not one based on ignorance and 'stuff I heard on facebook'. It sounds like your technician has tried it, experienced it for herself and chosen an alternative which demonstrates perfectly the point that a woman can only make a properly informed choice based on her own experience and not that of others.

I wasn't trying to censor any discussions on the topic. I think, perhaps, my original reply was badly phrased.

 

What I really wanted to say was that some views expressed here were strongly held and strongly expressed by those that were posting and likely to invoke an even stronger response. My technician's feelings on this were very strongly expressed and couched in terms that really could not be posted here. This seems to be a subject where everyone has an opinion even those who cannot ever breastfeed [men]

 

I am not expressing my opinion on this matter here but rather trying to clarify my earlier post in light of your reply.

 

I do not intend on posting any more replies on this thread.
