Read Only doesn't set

Hi,

 

I am working with a customer who needs to set a file as read only. The client is XP, and the server is a linux based system (not sure which variety). The file is on a mapped drive, and resides on the server.

 

When on the client, I right click on the file properties and can set it to be read only. I tick the box, and all looks fine. I then go to check if it is read only straight afterwards, and it has unset itself! It's as if it isn't actually setting the read only property in the first place.

 

I have also used the command line attrib program, but that's makes no difference.

 

Any idea of what the problem might be? Do I have to set it to be read only on the server? Not ideal really!
