Connecting a new server to my UPS

Hey all,

 

Might seem like a daft question, but can I plug a new server into my APC UPS whilst it is on and powering 3 other servers.

 

I seem to remember having a problem doing this with my old UPS way back when, but that may have been when I was trying to hook up a CRT monitor.

 

So, any issues with hooking up two new fly leads into my new storage server?

Nah, i've never had a problem!

Should be fine as long as the UPS has the capacity to handle the additional power load.

Its not just the load its the length of time that the servers can stay up for if you have power probems. I try and keep my problem time at about 20 or more. The electrcians have to do maintenace as well. Plus how do you connect the usb lead to the server we only have one usb connector per usp to tell the server there is a a problem and when to shut down.

Network monitering card allows for it to be hooked into the network and allows it to talk to all of the servers that rely on it and shut it down. USB is also prone to failing out and bringing the server down as it can't contact the UPS. Network monitering also allows the USP itself to be controlled and send events over the network so you get reports on any power faults.

A network attached UPS thats a good idea. I will look for one of those next time I have to buy one.

Dependng on your current UPS you may be able to buy a managment card for your current stuff.
