My 1st day with a RaspberryPi

(I'll be altering the facts here to protect the guilty but the gist will be right )

 

Got my Pi this morning but was detailed domjobs before being allowed to play and of course the F1 practice went on a bit so that's my excuse for not getting it to the running a nuclear power station state

 

1st prob - no HDMI monitor but bought a £5 HDMI-DVI lead from Chorley market.

 

So download the standard debian distro, used my galaxy tab usb charger as the psu, plugged kbd and mouse into usb and it worked

 

The pi boys decided to make things hard and just present you with a linux login !

 

After googling/twitting/edugeeking for 2 hours - I eventually found the piece of paper in the box with all the details as to what to do next and entered the user pi, password raspberry and then typed startx

 

I then ran up Scratch from the menu (bit slower than I'm used to even on my XP netbooks) and stopped for a rest.

 

After tea/Raiders of the Lost Ark/Superstar it was back to the table and see if we can get it on the net.

 

Ran a long lead from dining room to living room router - that worked but obviously wanted wireless facitilities

 

Now - thats when it starts to get geeky.

 

I had a 3Com wi-fi dongle around (RA2870 chipset it turns out to be) - I needed to get a USB hub up and running as now need 3 ports (kbd/mouse/dongle) - lots of googling and eventually after apt-getting the latest drivers for it and finally getting the syntax right for a non-encrypted wi-fi setup (for some strange reason there's not a lot of info on that configuration!)

(I'll post my config once I'm back at pi tomoz)

 

Anyway - Pi finally picked up a DHCP address from my wifi router at 23:30 but then failed to actualy display a real T'internet page (it will let me ping the router and even log into it via Midori (the Pi browser) but no futher !

 

At that point I stopped and decided I'd nearly won and 5 mins in the morning and it'll prob work

cat /etc/resolv.conf

 

Try pinging out to say 8.8.8.8 to check you have routing in place.

I will have to get a Pi for some of our teachers...if they think connecting their laptop to our network/projector/audio is a pain*...

 

 

*I am being sarcastic of course as all they actually have to do is connect one usb lead to the docking station...and Robert is their father's brother...

I think the wifi/network/something is just dying/going to sleep at random intervals - I've had to reboot the RaspberryPi about 3 times today because of this.

(but its been fine for past hour as I'm posting this on it
