Auto create a network map.

Hi Guys,

 

Is there a piece of software that can scan my network and give me a network map? I have tried spice works network map but it only brings up my machine, on server and two empty clouds lol.

 

Need a quick way to produce a network map.

Is this in relation to the spice works network map not working? If it is what do i need to do to fix it?

turn that service on on your machine and the others, so it's not easy. first test is to browse your network, by clicking on network, what used to be my network places. whatever you can see there is presumably what spiceworks can see. I've not used it so guessing, but whatever you can see from your machine is presumably what any other app can see.

It does but the map it gives back is a bit difficult to read. Just wondering if there were any other alternatives?

MS has its own program for network mapping - Visio. Or I'd recommend 10-Strike Network Diagram - Software for Creating Network Diagrams and Maps (Windows Software) its easy to use and u may install it on pc or server in order to build the network diagram

drawing the map manually..what can be worse! try the software that builts the map automatically. but honestly, i dont like visio very much coz it doesnt always find all hosts on the network

This is something I've been looking at a while - The Dude is the best by a long way but it makes such a cock job of visualising it it's not funny.

Whenever anyone asks this question, the format is thus:

 

"What program can I use to do this?"

"Visio"

"Great, how do I do it so it does it automatically?"

It's not something particularly difficult.

 

SNMP and possibly LLDP data gathered from switches is plenty enough to see what switch is connected to what port on another switch

Netbios and SNMP can get information from printers and wifi AP's easy enough.

 

The Dude makes multiple clouds of the same subnet called segments and thus makes it next to impossible to actually do a physical layout of anything.

10Strike is just crap out and out and will make any excuse possible for not drawing any links. It'll happily find most of your devices but if you want them linking, do it with tracing paper and a pencil.

Can't find any download links for the addins that were available for Visio back in the day - the solarwinds one is dead in the water.

I think I might just run round the building finding edge switches and manually noting their uplink ports then figure out core by elimination/what we already know. Then I might tackle some GPL software and make a proper job of it, if I get time.

There are quite a few options out there to do this. Many companies make solutions that will do the job well, but some can cost quite a bit. Here's a few options that might meet your requirements:

 

SmartDraw - Only semi-automated, but inexpensive and one of the best drawing/mapping tools I've ever used.

 

Automatic Formatting - Features Overview

 

Topomapper (by ManagEngine) - automated L2 network mapping software. Works well, starts at $495. Possibly your most cost effective solution when making the capital vs. labour decision (e.g. Buy the software vs. spend days drawing the maps it creates).

Spot Maps - not a fully automated mapping solution, but it makes creating maps very easy and creates some very nice looking maps that are also functional (live). Mac only though.
