Extremely Weird - Intranet Shortcut works - Shortcut set as homepage doesnt????

We have a Wordpress based intranet, where students or staff can login if required....

 

I have set there homepage to "http://www.thedash.org.uk" and this loads the page just fine. But when they try and login it sometimes refreshes the site and there is no login. Highly likely a wordpress problem somewhere... BUT

If i create a shortcut to "http://www.thedash.org.uk" and load it from their desktop it works 100% of the time?

 

Does anyone please know what is the difference between loading a browser and it opening the homepage or loading from a shortcut?

May be silly suggestion, but you caching webpages at all server-side? If you're caching the homepage, but not the shortcut one etc. (aka it's reloading from shortcut)

Do you get the problem if you just type the link directly into the URL bar?
