I haven't seen any other posts on here about this, and most of you seem to 'get it' when it comes to Steam, gaming and PCs in general. Hopefully I can get more help here than I did from Steam and RockStar Support (which was virtually none).

Anyway, my hubby downloaded Max Payne 3 (pre-download), went to play it after the release hour and gets the error message that he needs Service Pack 1 (Windows 7). He has this. His computer also clears the specs by far to run the game. So, we've tried everything from logging in and running as administrator to fussing in the registry (as per direction from RockStar) and to no avail will this game run. The ONE time it actually booted it froze on the legal jargon splash screen and hasn't booted ever since.

If you need more info let me know. Here is what I know off hand

Windows 7 64-bit w/ SP1

NVidia GForce GeForce GTX 580

Intel Core i7

12 GB Ram

And yes, we have tried running it from the exe outside of Steam.

Also right click the steam exe and ensure there is nothing checked in compatibility mode tab (and the shortcut to run steam) as that can cause weird things to happen.

What version of nvidia drivers do you have? new drivers were released a week or so ago.

Ok, nothing is checked on the compatibility mode tab and we have version 301.42 on the NVidia driver.

Ok. I did what you said and followed the direction in that post, and it now only works by launching via the .exe for the game, still can't launch it in Steam...however, Steam still registers that its being played (view-able as in-steam game on friends list)

still can't launch it in Steam

The first time I ran Max Payne 3 via Steam, a UAC prompt appeared asking me to run SteamService.exe. Did you see this?

"D:\Games\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /installscript "d:\games\steam\steamapps\common\max payne 3\runasadmin.vdf" 204100

Also, does the following registry key contain the correct path to the game?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 3]
"InstallFolderSteam"="d:\games\steam\steamapps\common\max payne 3\Max Payne 3"

Arthur,

We never got a prompt for SteamService.exe

I'll have to check the registry key in order to answer that. However, it does seem SOME of the achievements are recognized, but not all. Which is odd, but as soon as I check the registry I'll get back to you.
