Creating additional virtual switch - Hyper-V ADVICE PLEASE!!

Hi guys,

 

I have a server HP ProLiant DL180 G6 thats has 2 physcial NIC's with the Hyper-V role installed. We're running on Server 2008 SP2!

 

I've inherited a VM on here that has a external virtual switch setup which is all ok.

 

What I'm looking for is creating a new VM and from what I've read online, you can only have each physical adapter can only be used for a single external virtual network. Is this correct?

 

As I want to create a new VM, is it best for me to create a NEW virtual switch on the 2nd physical adapter? Also what's the static IP I should give to the 2nd physical adapter for me to create this virtual switch?

 

I'm just trying to get into grips to all this and want to make sure I set this up correct, so I'd appreciate any feedback - just to confirm both virtual switches have to to external.

Why not just link the new VM to the existing external virtual switch, or is it that you want a dedicated NIC per VM for performance?

i agree, using the existing external virtual switch would seem to be the best bet.

 

if network performance is a concern i'd look at the feasibility of teaming the two network ports, although i think the recommendation is for the parent partition to have a dedicated NIC. Not sure how prevalent that is on not heavily utilised hosts.

Hi, I have a couple of DL380 G6s which have 4 ports. Ports are teamed and trunked for assigning VLANs to different VMs, very fast, very efficient. All VMs take advantage of the failover and HA capabilities of the teamed NICs. Only one virtual switch and one static IP (parent partition).

 

Assigning a specific static IP will depend on the VLAN the new VM is going to be on and your current network numbering scheme(s).

 

Not sure if the HypV VLAN capability is in Win2K8 SP2, worth a look though. I have W2k8 R2.

Performance has to be good for this VM so teaming the NIC's from your experience and advice seems the best thing. I'll go about looking into this and testing it.
