Those of you with .sch.uk domains, can I ask how much are you paying for them and from whom? Ours is hosted elsewhere and our current registrar would like £45+VAT per year to do the DNS for us. When compared to the costs of our .co.uk, .org.uk and .org domains, that seems like a lot of money...

For us they're free as part of our IT services from our LEA.

We don't pay a penny and can access a considerable level of control over the domain through the web panel. There are features in the panel I daren't touch but theoretically I can register and add totally new domains through their panel.

We did get ours free with our web hosting, but we've since moved that elsewhere (also because they wanted a silly amount of money for it!) and I don't really want to pay £54/year for DNS management which very rarely changes, and when it does I have to fax a request (oh, the irony!) which they action a few days later.

RM, perchance? They're who we're with, and it still strikes me as stupid that they will only accept changes to the DNS on faxed, letterheaded paper. Because obviously, letterheaded paper is impossible to steal, whereas an email sent FROM THE DOMAIN I'M ASKING ABOUT is no proof at all.

Good guess.

True, but our kids all have email addresses on the domain too. You would think they would accept requests from pre-approved individuals though, or via Support Online.

Just to let you know the domain names belong to the school. Nominet do not charge any company anything to host the domains.

The costs you may incur by moving from the LA are for the MX hosting / email scanning and access to their control panel to access it.

If you change the name of the school then nominet will apply a charge for registering of the new domain. This was previously met by Becta and some LAs / RBCs are covering the costs on this, but in general you have to cover it yourself (IIRC £10), but there is some paperwork involved which needs to be sent to nominet by the school or on teh school's behalf.
