Windows Live Essentials discontinued. Movie Maker to be bundled with Windows 8

It looks like v15.4.3538.0513 will be the last version of Windows Live Essentials. Movie Maker will now be included as standard with Windows 8.

 

...the Windows Live Essentials application bundle will go away. Microsoft first announced Windows Live Essentials in 2008, with the first release coming alongside Windows 7. The intent was to decouple the applications—including Mail, Messenger, Movie Maker, and Photo Gallery—from Windows itself, so that they could be regularly updated on their own timetable.

 

Most of the applications themselves will live on, but in Windows 8 (and Windows Phone) they are pre-installed apps, rather than a separate package. (Source)

Shame to see Windows Live Writer left out. It's actually pretty good, and a lifesaver for those of us trying to get beginners to publish web content.

Looks like they are pulling the trigger and going to an app driven model like Apple......

You can use Word and publish right out to a blog or something so that may behind the live writer dissapearence. I'm guesing this is to do with the antitrust stuff wearing off and them being able to integrate everything in the OS like their compeditors.

Good point about Word: I've been using Live Writer so long I hadn't noticed they'd integrated almost all its functionality into Word 2010.

I think the most interesting aspect of that grid is that MSN Messenger uses XMPP? I had no idea they had switched to that!

Yeah. Microsoft made the switch just before Christmas.

im glad theyve removed messenger from all of it was frustrating having to download the entire live thing and then deselect all the stuff just to install msn messenger
