[windows software] CALs

Just to be absolutely sure in my mind in a standard Windows client/server network you need:

 

1) 1 server OS license per processor per server (multi-core classed as one processor)

2) 1 Windows desktop (XP, 7) licenses for each machine - usually the OEM sticker

3) A CAL for either each device or user.

 

Without the CALs if your desktop Windows client connects to the Windows server you are unlicensed?

 

Does Server 2008 R2 come with any "inbuilt" CALs - I know at my place we got 5 user licenses bundled, but I'm sure it was a deal.

 

It took me long enough to figure this out a year out, and now I've got a mess at another site. I need to be more than 99% sure in my head before taking this to Governors.

 

I also assume if the school used a third party company to advise on licensing, if the school missed buying CALs the responsibility is with the school - not the professional (third party) advice they sought out?

If you have EEES you dont need extra cals they are included,

 

Also i think that you only need the server OS per processor for datacenter edition only. Standard & Enterprise is per box.

We don't have EEES - not yet anyway.

 

Everything was bought ad hoc. I can't find any paperwork relating to CALs - only to the Server OS license and the OEM licenses for Windows on each machine.

I'd say you'd be in a sticky mess in terms of licensing if you didn't have CAL's and Microsoft come knocking.
