Smooth wall on VMware

Hi

 

Does anyone know if you are able to setup smooth wall as a VM running on ESXi ? I am new to smooth wall and if I can avoide it, I don't want to put it on a physical box.

You certainly can.

 

Yes, all Smoothwall products can run on VMware. Please bear the following in mind:

 

1. Setup a generic Linux kernel 2.6 32bit OS VM for your Smoothwall install.
   
2. Make sure you create a large enough disk and and allocate enough memory if the Smoothwall product is running the Guardian web filtering software. Have a look at this article to get an idea of how much logging data the Guardian system will generate.
   
3. Guardian reporting can put quite a stress on the disk subsystem. Since a virtualised server will likely be running multiple servers it may be an idea to setup an external system to handle the report generation to preserve resources on the virtualised system.
   
4. On VMware ESXi Server or workstation install please use the e1000 NIC network card device.

Yep - we do it here and it seems to work just as well if not better.

As others have said yes plus it is fully supported. It is not support on Hyper-V

Yup - Are you running it as just a web-filter right? I wouldn't recommend putting it as a VM if you are using as firewall as well (without dedicated nics, vswitches etc).

 

There is a Vmware tools support option to install somewhere along the line.

But they will help you get it going under Hyper-V (or that's what I was told when I asked them....)
