Shadow Copy

Hi

 

I am running Server 2003 SP1

 

I have 3 Drives

 

C: 10gb - 1gb free

 

D:Applications, 30gb - 2gb free and

 

E:Data 232gb - 62gb free

 

I want to have Shadow copy on the E: Drive yet when I go to activate it it says "E:\ Is not eligible for Shadow Copies

 

Yet if I go to the properties of D:Drive I can make Shadow copied for C: and D: but no E:..

 

All NTFS

 

Any Ideas ?

What sort of drive is 'E:'. Is it something fancy like a SAN volume? Also sure that the SYSTEM account has access to the root of E:.

Is it better to have the shadow copy .. copy onto another server ?

We have our set on another drive on the same server, MS say you can have it on the same drive but its better performance wise on a separate drive.

What about a diffrent server ? and what is the shadow copy size to the size drive it is shadowing.. ?

You can't have it on a seperate server, it won't let you select a non-local drive as a target. Shadow copies can not be used as a substitute for off-server (ideally off-site) backups. As if VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) can't keep up with the I/O it will just stop and delete all previous versions... handy eh!

 

The amount of space required can be configured as an upper limit on the drive you store your shadow copies on, the shadow copies tab in drive properties will tell you how much space you will need to enable shadow copies the first time.
