Phone effect in Audacity?

Morning.

 

I want to be able to highlight a part of a track and apply a filter or effect that will make it sound like it's coming from a bad phone line.

 

If that's not possible I could take the section and put it into a new project then apply settings to the new project.

 

Anyone know how to do this?

If you down sample it to phone quality you should receive the desired effect/ I can't remember what the bitrate is but 20k rings a bell (rather than the 44k for CD quality).

Ahhhh thanks - there it is. 30000 seems to give me what I am after.

 

Oooo. I have just noticed the button at the bottom to allow you to do this on the fly for the project so I am changing the settings, recording and then changing back. Great. That's helpful.

 

I can live with this but would find it easier if I could apply this to an existing selection, or more, likely a track. When I have played around with it in a track it alters the speed also. Does anybody know if there is an easy way to stop it from doing that?

You could try getting the effect using the FFT filter. Phones just pass a small range of frequencies, so make your selection, fire up the FFT filter, and drop the gain for areas outside the middle of the human voice range. Wikipedia reckons that range is 300Hz to 3400Hz - maybe make it taper off below 500Hz and above 2600Hz.
