Website will only work with www. in front of domain

Ok i have little to no experience with webservers... our school website will only work if you put www. infrom of the domain. How can i add a rule or name (not sure of the termanology i should be using here) so the you can just enter the domain in IE and get to the site.

 

eg

 

http://www.mywebsite.sch.uk works fine

 

mywebsite.sch.uk doesn't work

 

i think it something to do with DNS and forward look ups..... but i might be guessing here.

You need an A record which states something like

*.Mywebsite.Sch.Uk IP.OF.YOUR.SERVER

Actually that was wrong. That will let you put anything in front of the domain.

 

Your a records needs to be

Mywebsite.Sch.Uk IP.OF.YOUR.SERVER

http://Www.Mywebsite.Sch.Uk IP.OF.YOUR.SERVER

 

You could also add

*.Mywebsite.Sch.Uk IP.OF.YOUR.SERVER

This would also make ww2.mywebsite.sch.uk work also.

(same as parent) Host (A) 10.15.20.2

 

 

with a fully qualified name of;

 

*.mywebsite.sch.uk

 

 

i assume i wont see the effects straight away.

What do you see currently when you don't use www.

 

Do you:

 

a) Get page cannot be displayed / DNS error

b) A webpage that you don't expect

 

It might be DNS as per above or it might be a need for configuring the vhost of the webserver to "know" you want to use the non www address to access it too.

i get a server not found error without www.
