Analysis of bandwidth and network traffic

I'm looking to get some software to carry out long term analysis of bandwidth and network traffic on our network.

 

I've looked at a couple such as the offering from solarwinds but before I start downloading and installing demos etc. Can I ask for any recommendations or non recommendations which users hereabouts have tried or used?

Squid proxy should do what you need.

Im a Solarwinds fan myself but it's not cheap and is really aimed at the enterprise level administrator.

The flow monitoring is great and is just the ticket for keeping an eye on specific pinch points but if you just want some free baseline monitoring with reasonable reporting and drill downs do look at Foglight NMS Network Monitoring & Management System|Foglight NMS

It's free for the first 100 devices so that should take care of most schools switch inventory and a few servers.

 

I get an email every day showing the previous days usage and peaks it becomes very easy to spot when there is an anomally that needs looking into.

I have it running as a service on a 2003 server VM that we use as a support workstation and it never lets me down. Well worth a try. Takes a little setting up but there are loads of videos to help tweak it and they dont pester the life out of you to upgrade all the time.

here we use 10-Strike Bandwidth Monitor

it collects all traffic data and then you can view bandwidth diagrams in real time. Also it allows viewing traffic history for any date or period of time.
