Ubuntu on Android

This looks very very cool

 

But the real power is in the ability to launch your Android apps within that desktop experience. Same goes for contacts. Or your network settings. Or your notifications. It's Android within an Ubuntu experience. And it's pretty slick.

 

Manufacturers targeting the corporate phone, as well as the next-generation enterprise desktop and thin clients can easily add Ubuntu for Android to their smartphones. The customized version of Ubuntu drops in cleanly alongside the rest of Android, and the necessary Android modifications are designed for easy integration. Hardware requirements include support for HDMI and USB, standard features in high-end handsets planned for late 2012.

It's the dock for the Motorola Atrix 2...

 

For those of you who are reminded of Motorola's Webtop interface, you aren't far off — Canonical is using an Atrix 2 with modified software to demonstrate the concept. However, Ubuntu for Android offers far more functionality than the browser-oriented Webtop. The two halves of the phone are deeply integrated, designed to make switching between Ubuntu and Android as seamless as possible. (Source)

A few minor niggles aside, I'm an Ubuntu fanboi (pronounced fan-bwah). And all it took was a benevolent billionaire to steer the project. I doubted Unity at first, but I think it's bang on track. Coupled with the not-insignificant Google, this could make 2012 the year of something or other.

Both! Canonical are talking to TV makers behind the scenes. I'm pretty sure it'll be available as a distro, too. I dare say it'll appear as a set-top box too, for maximum flexibility, though I've just made that bit up. Good idea, though?

I'd like to see it appear on tablets as well, android when my eeepad is out of its dock and ubuntu when it is in it.

Here are the system requirements for Ubuntu on Android...

 

The OS will require at least a 1GHz dual-core device, hardware accelerated OpenGL/ES, 2GB of storage for the image, HDMI out with a second frame-buffer, USB host mode and 512MB of RAM. (Source)

 

I wonder if it will be installed on some of the forthcoming quad-core Snapdragon S4 (Krait) smartphones?
