Hello,

 

My server has just died and the new one has arrived but I have no install guides for installing SQL 2008.

 

Does anyone have any guides which will help me install sql 2008 r2 and sims install on server 2008 R2 64bit?

I was told by a Capita employee, that you have to use SQL 2008 (not 2008 R2) as it isn't officially supported yet but it should be soon.

 

Basically install SQL, note down the server name, admin name and password etc. Install SIMS itself (to allow you to test), then use the DBackup tool to restore the "backup". You should then be able to connect, it really should be that simple.

 

Just make sure you are installing the same version of SIMS as your datbase was when the old server broke.

Both windows 2008 R2 and Server 2008 R2 are supported.

There are quite a few threads on here with regards reinstalling a sims server, you can just follow the same setup for installing a test server if that's what the thread mentions.

Some things to look out for, when you install SQL, take note of the warning about allowing / opening the ports on windows firewall, or whatever firewall you replace it with, you need to do this to enable comms.

If you can keep the same name as old server that will save you having to fiddle with mapped drives and the connect.ini

You can download ISO for new install from SupportNet to do a clean install, then run ISOs for the updates e.g. latest autumn 11 or whichever you want to get to. Then use dbattach to drop your backup on to it. If you do end up having a newer version installed it's okay, if you just run a dbupgrade and it will update it. A good time to upgrade if you were holding off

We moved in September 2011, so SQL 2008 R2 support must have come into place in the last update.

I found this document, which was for the migration to 2008, got it from forums on SupportNet, not sure who from, and may have edited it since. Anyhow, it has some guidance for the sql install. Just ignore the bits about going to the other manual, the key bit is about which parts to install when going through the wizard.
