Looking for a Backup Solution?

Hey Guys

 

ATM we currently have 11TB of storage which we probably use half off. Currently backing up onto External HDD using ntbackup. It does work but were living in the dark ages here? Could you recommend me some Rack mounted storage. Something like a NAS? Altogether we've got 4 Servers.

I'd recommend Huawei Symantec all the way with storage. Excellent pieces of kit and very good value for money. The support has been fantastic too.

HP & Dell, who we also deal with, don't have the same "bang for your buck". But each to their own

We use exagrids boxes, the bit level deduplication is epic. Data Deduplication Solutions for Disk Backup &#38 Disaster Recovery

 

We've currently got 55,448.23 GB of backup data, deduped to 8,345.75 GB of actual data, but the backup software is unaware of the deduplication, so just sees a lot of backups available.

 

Thye're pricey, but a smaller box gets you a lot of usage.

Could you recommend me some Rack mounted storage.

 

Buy an Antec rack-mount case, fit two 5-drive capacity harddrive caddies in the front and whatever motherboard you fancy. Put 10 2TB drives in the caddies and configure, via software RAID, into a RAID-6 array, giving you somewhere under 16TB of disk space for backup. Use rsync to replicate the file structure of all your servers every night to the backup server and write a script to deduplicate files.

Also you could go for HDP3500 from HS, this is there low end rack mountable NAS, scalable to 48TB. You can then consolidate your data storage into one central location, be it the NAS deviceOceanspace HDP3500 Datasheet.pdf

What connectivity is required to the servers?

We can do 8x4gb FC, 8x1Gbe ISCSI (or a combo of both x4 and x4) or a full SAS solution,

 

You would also need to consider buy the appropriate HBAs depending on your connectivity.

We use them as NAS, SAN and Mixed Mode.

 

In our Hyper-V clusters we have 3 Nodes and up to 20 VMs running of a 10GBe DAC connection through a GSM7328s

 

As you only asked for a backup solution not an enterprise SAN it might be more suited to your needs, pm me if you want any first hand details because we actually use them day in/out and you can get 24TB for much less than you might think.

I've custom built a server - 16 x 2tb drives in a 36 bay Super Micro chassis - I have about 28TB usable storage for about 4.5k in total - easily expandable aswell Then I run BackupPC on the box and backup files and data etc easily.
