cpjitservices Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 My PDC has DNS as a server role (obviously) but my other server which sits beside it running WDS and WSUS etc doesn't and i'm having problems with rolling out Sophos from the Enterprise Console, on my PDC if i type "ping officepc1" it pings it and resolves it no problem but my other server if i do the same thing it doesn't recognize the name but i can ping it via IP... would it be a good idea to install DNS as a service on my other server too without it affecting the network ... hopefully the 2 servers would sync nicely am I correct ?
bladedanny Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Does your WDS and Spohos server have a static IP address? If so is the IP of your DNS server entered correctly as the primary DNS server of you WDS and Sophos server? 1
Roberto Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Its probably a good idea to have more than one DNS server, but actually your problem here isn't the amount of DNS servers you have, it's that either the server you're testing from or your current DNS server has something configured wrongly. You need to resolve this and understand it before worrying about adding another DNS server. Are the DNS client settings correct on that server, in the network settings / tcpip settings panel? 1
Snuffkins Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 I wouldn't have thought that would help it with resolving DNS queries. I think all you'll get is a secondary copy of the Primary zones on your current DNS server. It would then only use that to resolve DNS queries if it was set as another DNS in your servers IP config and the primary went down, unless you entered those details as the first DNS server on that machine in which case it would query that first, but i can't understand why it wouldn't be working unless it doesn't have the DNS server IP set for the Network connection. I know it will be, but it's always the first thing i look at from when i used to be out on the road . 1
cpjitservices Posted January 19, 2012 Author Posted January 19, 2012 Silly me! One of those days! however the right DNS server (my PDC) was setup on my WSUS/WDS Server but it wasnt resolving... I've added my router into there like on all my other machines and it now resolves! Thanks for all your helpful & speedy replies!
