squeeky Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 We are thinking of getting a new server (moving from simple linux server) and I am unclear on a few things. As I understand we need 1 cal for each device (the cheapest way for us). Is a file server / domain server included as a device that needs cals. It seems like a stupid question but our file shares are currently all samba on linux. Thanks
CyberNerd Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 You will probably get MORE functionality using samba - if you have it keep it! but to answer the question, yes CAL allows access to anything on windows server except exchange, terminal services or any remote access.

CyberNerd Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Depends how you license them, with EES it is an annual payment - with a schools agreement the license is perpetual until you upgrade the server. So if you bought 2008 licenses now you would need to pay again with server 8.
