Chillibear Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I just wondered if anyone had used the Xeon E3-1220L chip yet? That's the dual core 20W one... I noticed it's available as an option for the Dell R210 II server and wondered what that would get the server's idle power draw down to? I've got previous R210s (first gen) with the 45W E3-1260L chip in down to 40-50W neck of the woods (idle power) with suitable C2/3 states and low power disks etc, but wondered if the E3-1220L would allow me to go lower (whilst keeping a moderately capable server), or if perhaps the idle power consumption of the chip E3-1220L would be about the same as E3-1260L, making there little point to getting the lower power model. Any thoughts?
SYNACK Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 If its an architecture revision higher or a fabrication process smaller then its worth it. If it is the same revision and fab size then don't bother. The newest lines shutdown so much of the chip if its not in use that their consumption is lower than an atom unit and can even run passive cooling.

Arthur Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I know it is not a direct comparison, but if you look at the idle power consumption of the Core i5-2500, i5-2500K, i5-2500S and i5-2500T, they are all within 1 watt of each other (despite having very different clock-speeds, TDPs and integrated graphics). I would choose the faster E3-1260L too.
