Microsoft Autoupgrading IE to Latest Version

For those of you still stuck in the far past thanks to buget issues, reliance on dodgey software or stubborness you may have another setting to add to your XP images.

 

IE to Start Automatic Upgrades across Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7

 

It looks like Micosoft is pushing out upgrades to the latest browser version to help combat malware etc. on the web thanks to people for whatever reason insist on running a 8 year old browser. It is pushed through Windows update so if you use WSUS you already have control, for home machines there is also a tool to prevent the upgrade and it will respect your previous choice if you had rejected an IE update.

 

Web devs will rejoice and Intranet devs will cower but at least some of the most vunrable systems will get patched.

Being poked with a stick in your left eye is made no better by the fact that being poked in the right eye is also painful

 

To be fair, with firefox we have to put up with glaring auth bugs that have been around for 5 versions, at least with IE it is always something new.

 

Looks like these updates will still be fairly optional anyway. Back to making IE6 at least functional (if not pretty) for our NHS pals.

speaking of auth bugs; we're having issues with new ipads using 'proxy auth' on https sites with smoothwall. Will submit a support request when I get something reproducible.

Difficulty is getting hold of an ipad some staff/students have them, but the IT team don't get paid enough...

BIG downside of user owned equipment. I'm thinking of putting it on transparent proxy instead.

I'll get one of the guys to try it here, if I can find the pre-sales ipad.

If you are going to have to support ipads, I suggest you ask for budget for one for "research purposes"

We're only 'supporting' them in the sense that we are connecting them to the internet -they're user owned devices. If we were developing an inhouse proxy I'd probably get one- but (in the nicest possible way) that's what we are paying you guys for
