MattDLEA Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 If we have loads of computers with windows xp OEM on and we want to change them to a Volume license key verstion for easy of deployment. Do we just need to buy 5 Volume license keys ( this is the minimum we can buy) or do we need a key for each computer?
FN-GM Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 You will have one key but you need to buy 1 license for every machine.
laserblazer Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Are you sure, I was told that so long as it had the same version licence sticker, we could use our VLK.
MattDLEA Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 even though they already have a oem licence attached
plexer Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 If they have an oem licence you can re-image them with a volume licence copy simply by purchasing a volume licenced copy of the s/w in order to obtain access to a volume licence key you do not need to buy a vlk licence for every machine. Ben
teejay Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 As long as it's the same release of windows, the yes you can just get one VLK. So if the OEM keys are for Windows 7 Professional you can re-image with Windows 7 Professional VLK, if they are OEM Windows 7 Home you cannot re-image with Windows 7 Professional without buying a VLK for each machine (cheapest through an EES agreement in that case). See the re-imaging doc here - Microsoft Volume Licensing - Volume Licensing Briefs
MattDLEA Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 Right i got you, So they had xp on so i can only put xp back on. that is fine.
teejay Posted December 9, 2011 Posted December 9, 2011 Right i got you, So they had xp on so i can only put xp back on. that is fine. It has to be the correct version as well, so if the OEM sticker is for Windows XP Home you cannot use VLK Windows XP Professional without buying a licence.
MattDLEA Posted December 9, 2011 Author Posted December 9, 2011 If i have a VLK media disk (for another school) is it ok to install this while im waiting for the new Key to come through for this school, just so i can get a head start on making an image machine. and then change the key when it arrives, or is the key built into the media... cant remeber from last time i did the install
