How do you create a Server 2008 DC in a test environment?

Hi.

 

My DC is still running on Server 2003, but I'd like to run a DC on Server 2008 in a test environment as we are planning to roll-out Windows 7 quite soon and I want to get to grips with .admx templates etc.

 

My question is, is it possible to have two DCs running on two different Operating Systems? Also, if I alter the group policy templates on the Server 2008 DC will this scupper the templates on the 2003 Server?

 

If I haven't explained this very well its because I've run out of coffee.

They'll live alongside each other quite happily. You need to run some prep on the 2k3 DC's (can't recall what it is off the top of my head, sorry, but it should prompt you to do it when you install AD on the 2k8 server) but after that you're fine. You can set preferences and 2k8-only polices fine on the new DC, the only problem is that you then can't tweak them on the 2k3 servers, but that's not really an issue.

 

I'm doing it right now, and it's fine and dandy. Just don't authorize the DHCP yet, no major issues but it started interfering with our WoL even though no scope was active.

you can have different server os's on the same domain you just need to use adprep on your 03 box so you can join the 08 box. Ive got a domain i look after where they have 3 servers 03r2, 08, and 08r2 (granted the r2 isnt a dc its a hp microserver acting as a glorified nas box that can run some quick vms and other odds and ends) but as long as you use adprep its fine you just cant promote the forrest/domain higher than your worst dc

Cool. Sounds quite straightforward. I'll give it a bash. I was just a bit reluctant to start on my DC testing in case it opening a massive can of worms and a shedload of problems!

 

Also can I ask - is it OK to use adprep when the DC is being used or is it best to wait until the half-term when its quiet?
