Backup Failure!

Im having a problem with backing up the system state from one of our DC's.

 

We use backup exec and Im getting the error code E000FEDF

 

Im pretty sure its just a permissions problem. Ive enabled logging on the system and searched for the error code in the log and this is what I have found.

How do I find out what is going wrong?

 

How can I find out what the component is thats failing?

Could be the shadowcopy service choking, try backing up the same area with the windows backup tool and see if that gives you a more sensible error. Is it a Hyper-V guest, some times it can choke if more than one OS is hitting VSS, stupid I know but true.

Its not a Hyper-V guest. The machine is a second DC and is replicated from the main DC. The main DC machine backup completes without error, which is strange because the SYSVOL folders should be identical??

Ok, just performed a backup of the servers c drive and it completed without error.

 

Anyone got any ideas on how to proceed??

 

Edit: Forgot to mention that I performed the backup using Windows Backup, not BackupExec

How I loved backup exec.... error this error that!

 

I m on DPM rarely had issues, anyway.. have you done all symatec updates? removed and reinstalled agent? (would reboot DC before re-install)

One thing I would try which has fixed some issues for me in the past - run the LiveUpdate for Backup Exec, if there are any updates let them install and then push the updates out to the remote client - worked for me in the past!

Ive rebooted all servers, and the backup is still showing errors.

 

Ive updated the main backup exec program, how do I update the remote client?

Go into Backup Exec > Tools > Install Agents and Media Servers..... > from here you can add the servers you wish to push the agents too, it should also tell you if there are any updates to be deployed with the agent.

SOLVED -

 

So I updated the agents and it still failed.

 

Whilst looking on the net for how to update the agents, I found some instructions on how to perform a system state backup using Windows Backup (I thought I could only do a backup of the whole of the c drive)

 

So I ran the backup using Windows Backup and it failed with a much more useful log than BackupExec ever gave me. It turned out there was a folder where the permissions were set to everyone denied!

 

The location of this folder was C:\Windows\SYSVOL_DFSR\domain\DfsrPrivate\ConflictAndDeleted\

 

I changed the permissions, deleted the folder and voila, backup completes.

 

After looking in this folder there is all sorts of old stuff. My question now is what is this folder for and can I delete the contents?

No, I didnt miss it. I ran a full backup of the servers c drive because I didnt think there was an option to backup just the system state. The backup of the c drive completed successfully but the backup of the system state failed.
