How to get financial approval for a new phone

I've had my HTC Desire for 18 months (on a 24 month contract) but was itching to get an Galaxy S2

 

I had a bit of a brainwave and put some numbers into a spreadsheet and then went to the CFO (the wife) for approval and she said yes

 

So for the old(er) geeks in the same position - this is what I argued.

 

1. In hindsight - I should have gone for the 18 month contract (£5 month more)

 

2. If I had, I would have had to fork out an extra £90 by now.

 

3. To cancel my old contract now costs £200.

 

4. But If I sell my old phone for £100, it will only cost £100.

 

5. But since I should have paid another £90 anyway - then the real cost of the change is £10

Great logic there, however you can get £106 with fone bank (£114 if you do bank transfer) so you either pay £4 on top of what it would have been or make £4

 

This in return offers better number crunching for the CFO

I've actually went with envirophone as they were offering the best deal out of the people I've dealt with before (them and mazzuma)

Ah but what are the costs of the new contract?

£4 month less than previous (But I didn't know that before I went purchasing - I just mentioned it when I got home so as to backup my prudent expenditure )

I do a similar exercise every year!

 

I usually go for a 24 month contract and take the zero up front cost option. Ive done this with all the iphones, and now Ive just swapped to a Galaxy s2 it was the same deal.

 

Just about every year, I sell my old phone and buy out of the remaining time on my contract. It usually means that Im a few quid in front. O2 give you a bit of a priority as a loyal gold customer and last year was the only one where I had to wait (3 days) for the new iphone4.

 

This year, I could have got 350 quid+ on ebay, but instead I sold it to a colleague for the contract buy out price (245), which I thought was fair because the phone had a small scratch on the screen and she is a close friend.

 

Loving the android BTW, more pleased than I ever was with Apple products.

When the iPhone 4 came out o2 offered me it for same tarrif plus £220 up front. I sold them my 3G for £230 to their recycle scheme so I was £10 up which was a bonus!

No way did you get £230 for a 3g in the 02 Recycle scheme - I got around £160ish for trading in a 3GS when the iPhone 4 came out!
