HD Failure in HP server

Came in this morning to find one of the HDs was showing signs of failure (Green & Blue LED lit up simultaneously). I replaced the drive without thinking clearly with a 10K SAS drive. The rest of the array is running 15K SAS in RAID 5 with a Hot Spare.

 

Since everything is now looking honky dory, can I simply pull out the 10K SAS drive and replace it with the 15K SAS without messing up the RAID structure? :\

 

My guess is you can as the hot spare will kick in automatically should I pull the incorrect drive out. Once a fresh one is put in the hot spare should go offline when the RAID rebuild is completed, right?

If your drives are all hot swap then you can just pull out the 10K one and put in a 15K one. Then use the HP utuility to watch the array rebuild.

 

I have only once had a HP drive fail and it was a red/ orange LED not blue. I've only ever seen blue when I have the Raid utility open on the server.

As long as the RAID array has been rebuit (Check in HP System Managment Homepage) you can just pull the drive and replace.

It was probably using the hot spare, so just look to see. If you not using system Managment Homepage, why not?

I've never used the Management software before. Does it require installing locally on the server? Can it be used if the server is running VMware ESXi?

HP System Management Home page is installed by default along with the management Agents if you installed the OS using HP SmartStart CD that ships with the server. If you didn't use SmartStart (Which is a fab way of setting up a machine) you can download the latest disk and install the proliant support pack. This will give you full health information on your machine.

HP System Insight Manager is an optional server install, physical or virtual and this will monitor all your HP server and give driver updates but The support pack must be install on all machines and SMNP needs to be setup to send traps. It's worth it because you will know when things are going wrong. SIM also sends emails, text. I love it and it's free!

PS it also manages any SNMP device, get reporting on switches, Printers & wireless!
