Hosting Files for non-organisational people

I've been asked to set up something on our sharepoint site that will provide online file storage to an outside body of people. This group consists of a number of people - none of whom are members of our staff/student body. They would have read-only access.

 

It needs to be password protected. Ideally, two of our non-technical staff need to be able to upload documents to it.

 

Is SP the way to go with this? I know that SP can be used to create internet portals but this is something I have no experience in.

You have a fews way you could probably do this to be honest,

 

If these files are generally for people outside of your organization then maybe consider having a look at Google Apps and have every person a Google ID. They login to Google Apps, See the documents and can also edit them online. (changes will be saved in real time).

 

You can then look at permissions in Google to set up permissions etc.

If you do not require these people to edit the documents etc. then depending on the nature of these files you could just host them on a webserver and password protect the directory using .htaccess or something and that will do the trick. If you have sharepoint already in place, then you could also just utilize this. Create them accounts in ID (example: Ex_B.Gates) and then use that method.

Also bear in mind you will need to licence those users, both for AD and sharepoint
