Windows 7 Folder Redirections

Hi All,

I realise folder redirection has been discussed alot, but cant seem to find this particular answer.

 

How have you all re-arraged (if at all) your home folder structure?

 

Windows XP had \\server\share\USERNAME as H: and also my documents redirected to the same path, My videos/pictures etc within that folder - easy.

With Windows 7 with now have alot more folders within the profile folder (not within my documents).

 

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData
C:\Users\USERNAME\Contacts
C:\Users\USERNAME\Desktop
C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents
C:\Users\USERNAME\Downloads
C:\Users\USERNAME\Favorites
C:\Users\USERNAME\Links
C:\Users\USERNAME\Music
C:\Users\USERNAME\Pictures
C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games
C:\Users\USERNAME\Searches
C:\Users\USERNAME\Start Menu
C:\Users\USERNAME\Videos

These are all redirectable with group policy assuming you have updated/upgraded.

 

Assuming most people redirect the desktop and start menu to a shared location, what did you do to the rest of the redirects when moving to windows 7?

 

Did you leave all the redirections alone and just point "Documents" to \\server\share\username?

 

Did you recreate their folder structure to match windows 7?

\\server\share\USERNAME\AppData

\\server\share\USERNAME\Contacts

\\server\share\USERNAME\Documents

Etc..

 

Did you do it another way?

 

Did you only redirect a select few? If so why?

 

If you didnt redirect them all did you encounter any problems?

Example:

People downloading something to the default download folder, c:\users\username\downloads, then not finding it later when they moved computers)

Video editing (media maker/adobe) trying to use the video folder by default and not their my home drive (again not saving to the network path)?

 

Im guessing the older software would still look for 'my documents' and find the new 'documents' rather than using 'Videos' but as time goes on I could see the software being updated to reflect the profile changes.

EDIT: Might need moving to Windows 7, thought it should go in 2008 R2 due to this mainly being about the group policy redirects.

We have redirected Start Menus, Desktops and Users My Documents. All other potential redirection options [Pictures, Music, Videos,...] are not set as they will 'follow' the My Documents settings. Seems to work well enough for us for our staff and students.
