how long is a piece of string?

Seriously - depends on: LAN Speed (1gb/s?), server spec

I migrated 1100 users from a DL380 quad core with 16GB of ram to a dc5700 with 2gb ram and back again in about a day and a half....

Yeah I had to build EX-2 with 2010, then move everyone onto it

Then once they were all moved, I blatted EX-1 and installed 2010 on it then migrated everyone back over...

Trouble came with some of the system mailboxes - theres a PS command you need to run to allow them to be moved (Discovery Mailbox is one of them IIRC)

Not as such. I did it during an Easter Break so no one was in

Also we were on Outlook 2010 which auto finds EX servers so we didnt need to reconfigure them

Lastly, the EX2 box was only temp during the upgrade - the EX1 was rebuilt identically except for having Exchange 2010 on it..

The good thing was that all your config settings (routting, connectors, etc etc) are stored in AD so each new EX 2010 install auto picked them up

Literally all we needed to do was install EXchange server and migrate the mailboxes - everything else was picked up

I think we only had a legacy for about half a day...

I think Outlook 2007 is the same with regards to autodiscovery, and that legacy is only needed for 2003 or earlier

As long as you have both servers up it kinda does not matter becuase the 2007/2010 migration can be done live so the user has access even while the box is being migrated.

If the server has a different name you want both up for a while anyway so that the server name in peoples profiles is rewriten by exchange.

As above the time taken is dependent on a whole bunch of stuff but I moved over a 30GB lot in about a day from a slow box to another slow box. It should be doable overnight if your hardware is alright easily and the users shouldn't notice anyway.

When microsoft talkes about 'legacy.name.com' is this done automatically? do I have ot set anything up for? or when staff hit the webmail.name.com at the exch 2010 box it will redirect to 2007 without me doing anything?

The legacy stuff is only for Exchange 2003, if you no longer have any mailboxes on 2003 you don't need it at all. It is not done automaticlly and you need to setup DNS (external and internal) along with the legacy URLs in the 2010/2007 configuration but again if you no longer have any mailboxes on 2003 it is no needed.

I only have a exchange 2007 box so how do I set it up for legacy? where in dns? where in exchange?

You don't need to, you get all the functionality, legacy was just for compatibility during migrations from 2003 to 2007/2010. As you don't have an Exchange 2003 box you don't need it.

Which DNS, external mail mapping? Webmail mapping?

The mapping to the local internal server name inside outlook will be changed by exchange. When a client hits teh 2007 exchange and is redirected by it to where the mailbox now is on the new server it will update the internal server name inside the outlook profile.

As to the other DNSs you should be able to move them last as 2007 should be able to redirect through, not 100% sure on that though but I do know that mail will wander through from the 2007 to 2010 just fine until you repoint the external entry to the 2010 server directly.

Now I m getting confused :/ I just want to make sure of no down time with dns settings

lets say I have local server name e2007.school.local and new e2010.school.local and mx record pointing to e2007.school.local what should I change in dns and when?

You change the MX record when you are sure the new one works for inbound mail you can do this before or after you have moved the mailboxes as either server will be able to accept mail and transfer it to the mailserver that holds the users mailbox.

this sounds better :) lastly when I m happy with internal mail and I change records over when staff hit webmail.grammarschool.com (when I re-point it) old ex2007 boxes will hit the ex2007 webmail box and move ex2010 will hit the ex2010 webmail box?
