New rack mounted server

Hi folks,

 

Need a wee bit of advise on a new rack mounted server to replace an old piece of &%$£

that has been causing me no end of issues due to lack of resources (OS and hardware limitations).

 

Have been taking a look at the HP DL line-up and am sort of swayed towards either a 160 or 320.

 

The server will be handling a new wordpress based site, a support ticketing system which is rather

memory intensive, our external mail gateway and the databases to support each of them.

 

I want to make sure that I have a box that is not going to run into the same issues I am having now

in another couple of years.

You may want to outline the issues you are having currently to give us a better idea as to whether you would have them again.

 

From personal experience I have been quite happy with the hp servers, have mostly used the 380 and 360 with the dual PSU and dual CPU for the reliability and horsepower that we require.

Most of the problems have been lately with the box only being capable of supporting 4Gb of memory

and between the ticketing system and it's DB eating most of that it has been paging horribly causing issues with the

other services.

You can see how much memory the server will support in the quickspecs, I think most of the new hp gear can support a lot if you are using registered ram http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13344_na/13344_na.HTML#Memory the 320 look to support 192GB or 24GB using unregistered.

Mix of the HP DL165 G7s and the HP DL385 G7s here - with the AMD 8 core processors at the same price of the Intel 4 or 6 core processors.

 

If you are simply coming across a 4GB RAM limit are you using a 32bit or 64bit Server OS? (e.g. 32bit might be Server 2003 while 64bit would be Server 2008 R2).

 

If you are just using a 32bit OS then you might be able to get away with upgrading the RAM in your server box and doing a fresh OS install of Server 2008 R2.

It's a mix of both Server 2003 32bit and that the box itself can't physically support more than 4Gb (5 year old dell server

that wasn't exactly top spec at the time).
