Hi folks,

 

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to buy a photo import licence without using a photographer? We are quite capable of taking photos, but having to manually import one at a time just because I'm not a photographer seems crazy!

When I spoke to Capita last year they said I could only get them from a photographer. I gave up last year, but its rolled round again and I'm hunting again :D

I'm not sure that advice is correct.

 

How about asking and paying a local photographer for a licence only.

 

If it happens every years why not ask Capita about a licence? I'm not sure what the criteria is.

Contact David Grassoff at Capita - I think you're after a Batch import license which is an annual license at £70. PM me if you want his contact details.

Just out of curiosity, how many people think it's acceptable that we have to pay a licence fee to import photographs in to SIMS? (I know you can do them each manually for no extra cost).

 

Do we not pay enough for the system already without paying an additional £70 a year for this?

To be fair there are a number of add-ons and modules that Capita have to charge for. This may be one, I don't know for sure.

 

It appears to be a part of the basic SIMS system, I can't see any hint that it is an add-on...

It's an additional function that requires the purchase of a licence to activate. I'm not absolutely sure but I think we have had this discussion with Capita and my comment above was the outcome.

Yeah, I decided not to raise that particular point earlier, but it does sit badly with me. That said, management signed the order at 3:30 so I (or more accurately my PFY equiv) am very happy to not have ~300 manual imports ahead of me.

I know that the OP did not use an external photographer but if you do:-

 

If you are using a Capita approved photographer then they should provide the licence for you as part of their costs. If they don't, then look for a new photographer next year that does. They make enough out of the sales and purchasing the licence for you is the least they can do!

 

The licence lasts for 12 months. It is possible to make this last for two years by having your new photo session less than 365 days from the last one. e.g. 9th September 2010 and 6th September 2011. The one licence will cover both sessions!

But why should it be the photographer's cost to absorb? Those costs have to get covered somewhere, if they don't charge us then it hits the parents who end up paying more for the prints.

At least at the time of buying the licence you aren't forced to purchase installation and training!

Sure Capita would happily include the 70 odd pounds in the annual maintainance cost, not sure how schools would feel about the forced increase in cost however. Everything costs money, if Capita want to bundle it and make you buy a line sql script to license it (like FMS Suppliers export etc), I'm not complaining.

There are plenty of Capita Photographer Partners.

If they won't source the Licence then they obviously don't want your business! There will be others that do!

Except that not all 'Partner Photographers' are licensed to deal with the licensing stuff. Tempest for example are an accredited Partner photographer, and capita even says their customers should contact them direct for a license. Accredited School Photographers

We criticise Capita if they charge you for something you don't want ... and then have a go when they leave something out and it is a choice for you. Most schools will get a photographer in at some point and if the school already has the licence do you really think they will drop the price from their cost to you? From personal experience they won't ... and that was after talking with several photographers.

 

I had completely forgotten about this and will be passing it around local schools again.

From my fuzzy memory, it's not what it was, I believe that was the reason for the extra cost of the licence.

And most schools would not understand the IDs behind the scenes!

 

So, don't have it in big bold writing... Everyone in the modern world understands the need for unique identifiers. We all have them for loads of things.
