Transferring BBC programmes from VHS to DVD for school use

We have several teachers who have varying amounts of programmes on VHS and our supply of serviceable players is dwindling. It has been suggested that these can be transferred to dvd, or maybe even stored centrally for use as and when required. I don't think copyright regulations will allow us to do this, but I'm not exactly sure. Has anyone investigated this further?

I think the ERA Licence covers it.

The ERA licenses educational establishments to undertake copying of off-air radio and television broadcasts for use for teaching purposes. All UK terrestrial broadcasts recorded after 1 August 1989 are covered within the licence which allows recordings to be made for teaching purposes, provided that the recording is clearly labelled with the date and title of the recording and the statement “this recording be used for educational purposes only”. In addition, the licence allows further copying of programmes recorded under the licence and allows the compilation of extracts of material for teaching purposes

The copying of commercially produced, pre-recorded videos, audio tapes, CDs and DVDs or programming provided in any on demand services is not authorised by the ERA Licence

I'd store centrally rather than convert them to DVD. You might also have look at compressing them and converting to mkv, then they can be played on any device that has VLC installed.

One step at a time I think, though a central store would simplify things for the teachers. Now that I know we can safely transfer our VHS stock to digital, our next step is to find the person who will do this.

You might want to contact the CLC they used to have the facility to do this. Storing it centrally would be a good solution, but it will take up allot of space.
