[ms office - 2010] Multiple Excel Windows?

I've looked all around the interweb for this and tried a couple of solutions that all fail. What I want is a separate Window for each Excel workbook. I can't seem to find any way of making this happen. Anyone know if it's possible, and if so, how?

the only way I manage this is to open seperate instances of Excel, then use the open dialog within each instance. but its a pain

As above, or make the master Excel window span your whole multi-screen workspace, and hit the maximise button on each workbook (i think it's called Restore when you do that) then you can change the size and lay them out next to each other within the master Excel. A pain, but doable. Also if you minimise them, they line up along the bottom like windows apps do.

+1 to @jstuttard although formulae won't see workbooks in other instances of Excel which is irritating

There's a way to refer to other documents though isn't there? So it works even when they are closed?

i wish i could find a way whats the point oif being able to have multiple sheets open when they are all on top of one another

Yeah, but you have to type the entire file name and path - not exactly friendly! Whereas if they are all open in the same instance of Excel (and thus in one window) then you can just click on a cell in any open workbook and Excel automatically does that for you. Only seem to have had this problem since Excel 2007!

amazing excel is still using windows 3.1 window management, oh well, by the next version it'll all be full screen, 1 sheet at a time, on a tablet

as someone else said in sure in 2003 it was fine you could get it to open up a new instance for every sheet 2007/2010 unless you either open excel again then load the doc its one instance. I preume this is to use less ram but if you have multiple monitors its a total pita

Yes, on XP with office 2007. nothing different.

 

did no-one like my idea of just making the indivdual sheets smaller within the workspace? In 2007, under the view menu it's got buttons to automatically, tile, side-by-side them too.

You have to hold ctrl while opening Excel and it will open in a new window. V V V V useful for screen spanning

No joy All it does it ask me if i want to open in safe mode then it's the same as before. Opening documents with ctrl is the same. Only way is as said to launch different instances, or make the master instance massive and tile the workbooks within.

Excel 2007 by the way.
