Default Printer for deployed Printers

Yeah! I've just been deploying printers to get round some Win 7 security issues.

 

So now the next big question is if I want to get rid of my old printer scripts. How do I det the deafult printer when I've deployed them?

How are you deploying your printers?

I've started to use GPP for deploying printers and there's an option to set the printer as default, also you can set targeting rules so only specific people get specific printers ( such as office printers )

Use GPP printer mapping... makes life so much easier with the targeting as mentioned above.

 

I remember being amazed when MS first did GPO printer mapping with 2003 R2 that they provided no method to set the default printer, Preferences however is much better

Maybe give GPP a try. I like it lots and find it very easy to setup and manage.

I've found Gpp to be a bit hit and miss especially when using item level targeting also speed is an issue but for ease of management I would recommend it

What issues did you have with speed? I've not had this set up for long, but so far everything including the item level targeting is running smoothly. Hopefuly it stays this way.

I haven't really had chance to look at the reasons behind it. I suspect that it is to do with drivers more than anything (crappy HP drivers - not a rant for this thread though)

 

To be honest with you I am goin on my relatively noobish experience with this (only started looking at it recently) I have more than likely done something wrong or gone the wrong way round of doing something...

 

Like I said though, for setting up and ease of use it's a doodle

HP Universal driver can be a pain so I've heard, although that's a reflection on a poor driver rather than GPP I reckon.

 

Works well here on Server 2003 \ XP using "proper" drivers for each model of printer

I don't think it worked well with Win7 which was wy I went back to the deployed route.

 

I was having and issue getting things to run smoothly with XP and 7 as everything I tried for one didn't work/mucked up the other.
