hello all,

a little back ground, i am currently in school for my BS in network security, i have an HP priliant DL385 G1 that i am using to practice on.

i have an HP Proliant DL385 G1 that has dual gigabit NICs i use one to connect to my normal network and the other to service my kids network. the NIC that is connected to the network that provides internet access is acting like its shutting down; its not allowing icmp traffic or http traffic (or any type of traffic that i can tell) but yet its still saying that its connected to the network in the network and sharing center. i am forced to have to restart the machine and then it will work fine for about 24hours or so

i have a statically assigned IP address to each NIC. i have the "WAN" (NIC connected to internet side) NIC IP address reserved on the linksys E4200 router. the MTU on the router is set to auto.

can any one please help me with this.

thank you

Eric

Check the cards properties and ensure that in the power management tab 'Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power' is unchecked. If you are leaving this computer on for long periods this may be the cause of your problems. Edited by Dos_Box

well its been about 24 hours and it did it again. i got a message "Windows NT Intersite Messaging Service has stopped working" every time and i am forced to restart the server in order to get the internet back.

when i try to find a solution for the problem i get "cannot communicate with the primary DNS Server 127.0.0.1 should i change that to the IP address for my WAN or my LAN nic?

i did have it pointing to my internal DNS server (127.0.0.1) but it said that it could not find it. am i supposed to use one of the IPs that i have assigned to either of the nics?

ah ok - didn't realise it was on the same box - yes do it via its ip and ensure that the dns is setup to listen on that address.

thanks glennda, i will try it and we will see in about 24 hours whether its fixed or not.

Tbh I doubt that will make a differenc- I assume its failing because the box is off not causing the issue.

Is the dhcp client service started?
