Linux From Scratch

Has anyone ever tried this Welcome to Linux From Scratch! and if so how did it go. Thought I would have a try using a virtual machine as a host. Will this work or would it be better to have dedicated hardware for it?

A virtual machine would be fine, but you'd have to start again if you wanted it on a real machine. [Edit: this may not be true if it compiles a full monolithic kernel - don't know enough about it.]

I've never had the patience to try this, but it sounds interesting.

the idea of LFS is really to roll your own distro. So a vm would be fine as you then spit out an iso at the end to allow it to be installed into some hardware.

I tried it many years ago. It was really good for learning how linux works under the hood, but if you just want to try linux, then go for ubuntu/fedora or or something similar.

 

Compiling some parts of it (like the kernel and X windows) takes a long time, and will take longer on a slower computer. It should work fine on a vm, but might be faster if you can do it on a decent pc.

 

If you want any applications to run on it, you need to compile those as well.

This was going to be the ultimate product. Was hoping I could create something like DSL but with more up to date looking interface. Going through the book now and so far so good.

For something easier than LFS you might want to look at SuseStudio.
