This is very strange.

setting up new machines in our new science building. Imaged with fog. added to domain. maintenance login that runs ninite.

many reboots but

Software deployment through group policy just doesnt happen.

Brought one back to our office.

Plugged in. Software deployment started straight away!

I can't think of anything that would cause this..... any bright ideas out there?

seems to be something to do with netgear gs748ts switches installed in that building. we've rewired a port to a 3com switch in a nearby cabinet with a very long cable and then it works fine...

Have you tried upgrading the firmware on them?

That's worth checking.

Discovered something else. some ip addresses hadn't updated in DNS. when the machines and the dns were the same they seemed to work.

This is prob why software deployment didn't work. Also discovered gpupdate didn't work at the same time.

Slow DHCP/NIC negotiation with the switch, If they are intel cards look for the "wait for link : on" setting in the advanced driver properties or if under XP turn off mediasence in the registry to force it to wait for IP connectivity rather than a ready signal from the usually retarded NIC driver.

Different cards can sometimes negotiate at different rates with different switches to come to a stable link speed 10/100/1000. I have had issues with Netgear and D-Link (two companies I put on par with each other) and some network cards which work fin on other switches.
