D2D2T Solution

Currently backing up data to LTO1 and AIT3 tapes no longer cuts the mustard anymore. I am looking to implement a D2D2T solution as a way of moving from each physical server having its own tape drive. Now, I'm not even sure where to begin or where to look for this type of solution.

 

Do you guys have any suggestions/recommendations?

 

Also, re backup software, I was thinking of using Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 Advanced Server. Does anyone use it? Recommend it? I want something that doesn't give you hassles like BackupExec does.

 

As it stands, one server has 136GB of data whilst the other has 100GB. Everything else is sitting inside VMs, which I just download to external HDDs every fortnight.

Microsoft DPM 2010 will do just what you are looking for.

You can set disk backups to run daily and then tape backups to run monthly (or whatever works for you) all within the same backup job.

 

Something like a HP DL120 G7 with a bunch of 2TB drives (or whatever capacity you need) and then some kind of tape loader (or even just a USB tape drive) for your long term backups - here we have a Tandberg LTO4 loader.

@jamesfed, do you use a PCI SCSI Host Bus? Kind a like this so that it enables you to connect your external tape drive?

we bought a dell 50x LOT5 tape storage library for the d2t, and use a dell sas attached storage array with 15x2tb drives in it for the d2d. We use backup exec. Works well.

Yep we have something simlar - Adaptec SCSI Card 29320LPE Storage controller- U320 SCSI- 320 MBps

 

If you are intrested in the Tandberg loader though I'd suggest you take a look at a SAS card as the slow speed of SCSI drags down the backup speed somewhat (not that we arn't getting 2Gb/min all the same).
