additioinal network cards

Hi everone

 

i have added additional network cards to my server to try and help with load balancing but how do set it so that the server can use these i have set different IP addresses for each network card is that all thats needed to be done its just ive noticed that in the event viewer for system there is an error:

 

NetBT:

 

A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network. The IP address of the computer that sent the message is in the data.

 

the computer name is the server which ive added the additional network cards to

 

does anyone know how i could set the server to use these to help with load balancing but stop the errors from happening as well have i set something wrong

Best thing to do is team the network cards.

 

What make are they? Intel? RealTek?

Are they identical cards if not you might struggle to get them to team etc

hi yes the cards are identical except for the server internal network card which is a different make

You need the teaming utility provided by the cards vendor. This may only be possible if they are server grade cards and are supported in that way otherwise your only option is to use linux which integrates a generic software version of the above support.

 

If you actually tell us what the cards are someone may be able to help you.

remember if you team using link aggregation you need to have a switch capable of IEEE 802.3ad (and configure it).

I noticed on our SIMS server that the incumbent NM set up teaming without configuring the switch. Windows incorrectly showed that the NIC's were teamed (2gb) but the switch did not as LACP wasn't enabled.

As above, you do get a choice with some of the utilities, LACP is switch assisted and allows teamed up and down speed. Without the switch assistance you can still use a form of teaming but it is software based and only allows for teamed speed up but not down or the reverse thanks to the lack of layer two traffic handling ability further up the network chain (switch).

the extra network cards are HP NC112T PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter i have changed our main switch which the servers are all connected to the switch is an HP A5500-24G-SFP EI Switch thank you for your replies

You would want to config your switch to use the mode that you choose, as you have HP switching they have their own proprietary link type that could work well as it is fully native on both sides.
