Hyper-V2 R2 backups?

Hey,

 

We finally got some money to install a secondary server at a local primary school and it's working great, we have Hyper-V R2 running a couple of 2008R2 VMs and an Ubuntu proxy server chugging away nicely, but I've hit one snag so far... which is backups.

 

Ideally I would like some software that will take a full host backup (VMs included, the host is running 2008R2 Standard) to the Dell RD1000 drive so the onsite staff can just swap the disks over each week, but does anyone know of any fairly cheap backup software to do this? All of the "top" backup solutions can cost £100s - £1000s which we simply don't have. I've looked into using Windows Server Backup but it doesn't support the RD1000 drive. Being able to automatically eject the drive every Friday at a certain time would be a bonus too!

 

I've seen Hyperoo but I'm not sure on how good a product it really is... no one seems to know much about it

Give the free trial a go for hyperoo, then your know whats it like!

DPM 2010 will do it and very very cheap (tenner a physical box I think)

Does anyone know how the licensing for DPM 2010 works (we're on EES)? If I'm going to use it I may as well use it on both our servers. What would I need to protect our 2008R2 Hyper-V host and our older 2003R2 box?

Im currently looking for a solution to back up all our VMs we are running on our SAN.

 

I had the guys from Windows and Exchange Server Backup and Data Recovery Software shadowprotect in who now do reasonably priced VM licensing, but we have ESS too so was thinking of just using DPM 2010 if at all possible..

 

The one thing I cant figure out with DPM though after having a quick play, is whether I can store the backups on a network share or if it has to be local storage, sorry to hijack but can anyone answer this please?

Local storage or tape unless you have firestreamer to convert it into a file. You can also use iSCSI to expose storage to it. They made the Windows storage server iSCSI bit free so you could use this from another server to offer storage. I can't find it at the moment but it is somewhere on this forum.
