Migrate teachers to new laptops (local profiles) (w7x64 -> w7x64)

We will shortly be replacing all 200 of our teacher laptops. Our teachers currently use local profiles and some of them top 50gb, as they store all their itunes purchases etc on the laptop.

 

We are looking for an easy way to migrate these profiles from the old laptops to the new ones. The laptops will be coming with our image on it already, so we wont be reimaging them.

 

Google throws up the User State Migration Tool, but is this possible to do for example 10 laptops at a time? Want to automate the process as much as possible..

 

What is there out there that will do this for us?

If you have redirected stuff then you can write a script to just take ownership of the local profile and copy the files directly to the new locations in the various places on the server. Sometimes it is good to redirect stuff like music to the local computer drive you may need both the old and new laptops at the same time after the first logon to move those files.

 

You may need to reset the owner of the files to be the user afterwards as without the right GPO windows will get antsy if the user is not the file owner.

nothing is redirected to a server, the entire profile is redirected to a separate partition on the internal laptop HDD.

 

What I will be doing this time though is redirecting the documents folder and using offline files sync the local documents to the network share.

 

I was planning on having both laptops at the time of migration.

The USMT or the command line versions just work on their own so you could do as many as you wanted provided your network was up to it etc. You can script the scan state and load state and tools like MDT have this as part of their process as well. There are options to store the profiles elsewhere in the case of a "swing migration" so this is something I might be tempted to do, providing you have the storage space.

I have personally only used the tools on a small scale but they seemed pretty good.
