Hello

 

Does anyone know away of blocking the add device wizard without stopping access to the printers & Faxes.

 

When staff click on add device it searches the network for network printers etc, I would like to stop this.

You can disable 'Add a Printer' - User Config > Policies > Admin Templates > Control Panel > Printers

 

I don't think you can disable the Add Device Wizard. I think it's part of the 'Plug 'n Play' service which you cannot disable.

You can hide the option for devices and printers, they should still be able to use printers etc, but won't have access to edit them? Or isn't that an option.

I think ful56_uk wants to remove the Add Device Wizard (which I don't think you can do). They don't want to hide all of Devices and Printers, as it can be useful to 'tweak' advanced printer options, such as paper type or size for example.

Yeah that's what I want. Is there away of maybe telling the wizard to report back no devices like with the ad search. I know with the ad search you can use gpo and set max results to 0

If that's the case, this "should" be what you're after.

 

There's a GPO which should remove all networked printers from the "search domain for printers" option.

 

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers

 

It's called "Printer Browsing":

 

If you enable this policy, the print spooler announces shared printers to the print browse master servers. As a result, shared printers appear in the domain list in the Browse for Printer dialog box of the Add Printer wizard.

 

If you disable this policy, shared printers are not announced to print browse master servers, even if Active Directory is not available.

 

If you do not configure this policy, shared printers are announced to browse master servers only when Active Directory is not available.

 

Never used it, but sounds like what you're after

Thanks. I tired that did work. I'll look into somthing else.

found the exe for it, just denied that from running using file permission in a gpo

What I did was to remove Devices and Printers, then create a shortcut on the desktop that just showed the installed printers, by using a reg hack (which was pushed out through GPO). The users can still get into the properties of the printer to make changes, but they can't delete or add new printers themselves. That works well for me.

What operating system/server are you talking about? I'm assuming Win7 but I could be wrong.
